What is a Chemotype?

What is a Chemotype?

Essential oil composition even of the same specie varies according to the geographical climate, growing conditions, soil composition and age of the plant - the same specie of oil can produce different 'chemotypes'.

Chemotypes of essential oils are used by some Aromatherapists and Medical Doctors who use essential oils as medicines; here is an example of a chemo-type of the same specie of Rosemary grown in different locations: e.g. Rosemary oil from Spain is known as CT 1 and has higher levels of camphor than Rosemary from Tunisia, known as CT2 which has higher levels of 1,8 Cineole or Rosemary from France which has levels of Verbenone.
