The Magic 8 - foods that nourish your skin

Foods that nourish

As we head into a New Year, we all make a list of resolutions such as to be healthier, exercise more, drink less and make better choices for a better life (now and planning for the future). Most of us know that we must limit the amount of nasties we put onto our skin, as the biggest organ of the body, skin will absorb the products we use - so always opt for organic foods that will nourish your skin.

Nourishing our bodies from inside out is as important as the products we use on the outside. Firstly, drink plenty of purified water; we've all heard it, at least 8 glasses a day. Then select those whole organic foods that actively promote clear and radiant skin.

Some of the best foods that nourish your skin and provide the nutrients your body needs are:

  1. Yoghurt - high culture, organic, natural and plain Greek yoghurt varieties as they have almost twice as much protein, and less added sugar. Dairy assists with firming and one serve a day can assist diminishing those future frown lines.
  2. Pomegranates - this wonder fruit is full of antioxidants and polyphenols that fight free radicals and regulate blood flow about the body. Can be juiced and consumed up to a couple of times a day to reap the benefits.
  3. Soy - with such a wide range of soy products on the market such as milk or edamame beans, it is easy to get a fix for an even complexion. The minerals and proteins reduce bad pigmentation - introduce a serve a day.
  4. Walnuts - nuts are a great source of protein, and walnuts have the added benefit of containing omega-3 fatty acids to aid skins elasticity and smoothen skin texture.
  5. Kidney beans - are high in zinc, which has natural healing properties. Zinc is also linked to keeping skin clear, so eat up and help kill the bacteria that causes blemishes.
  6. Oats - try steel cut oats as they are less processed and hold more of their nutrients. As a low GI food, oats stabilise blood sugar levels and hold proven skin healing properties.
  7. Sunflower seeds - give added crunch to any cereal or salad, sunflower seeds are a packed full of vitamin E that protects skin, and helps it to heal.
  8. Dark chocolate - in high cocoa form (70% cocoa and above) contains high level of flavonols - a potent antioxidant. It is said to hydrate skin whilst making it feel firm. Don't get too excited, everything in moderation - a couple of squares as an after dinner treat will suffice.
